Sweepstakes Gambling Industry Urges Governor to Veto New Jersey Ban

The sweepstakes gambling industry is urging New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to veto a new bill that bans sweepstakes-style betting, passed by the state Legislature and now awaiting the governor’s signature.

The Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA) is leading the opposition, arguing that lawmakers have misunderstood the nature of sweepstakes gambling. In a statement released Tuesday, Jeff Duncan, executive director of the SGLA, called the bill “the wrong solution to a misunderstood issue.”

Industry Says Bill Could Harm Businesses Across Sectors

According to Duncan, the legislation would create “sweeping and vague” restrictions that could negatively impact not only digital entertainment platforms, but also a wide range of legal promotional tools commonly used by retailers, restaurants, and online businesses in New Jersey.

He emphasized that the bill fails to differentiate sweepstakes models from traditional gambling and could unintentionally disrupt standard marketing practices and customer engagement strategies.
