Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Senate Committee on Sports Betting CPI to Meet Weekly

Brazil.- April 18, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com  The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on Sports Betting in the Senate will begin its work this Wednesday, April 17th. In the first session, committee members will present the work plan and vote on invitations to testify.

Senators will meet twice a week, always on Mondays and Wednesdays, starting at 3pm and 2pm, respectively. The Senate established a deadline of 180 days for the CPI, during which the commission will conduct the necessary investigations.

Meetings will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays

On Mondays, statements will be received from individuals whose testimony is of particular interest to the committee members. The absence of plenary sessions that day will allow senators to dedicate more time to interviews and necessary clarifications.

On Wednesdays, the sessions will be shorter and will focus mainly on the approval of applications, invitations and summons, in addition to allowing the hearing of witnesses less relevant to the work in progress.

Understand the Sports Betting CPI

The CPI on Sports Betting was established with the aim of investigating possible irregularities and ensuring transparency in the growing sports betting market. The Senate’s initiative to open this CPI demonstrates its interest in monitoring this market segment.

Senator Romário (PL-RJ) was appointed as rapporteur for the CPI, while senators Kajuru (PSB-GO) and Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) assumed, respectively, the presidency and vice-presidency of the commission.

Senators Romário and Jorge Kajuru

Senator Kajuru highlighted that John Textor, owner of SAF do Botafogo, will be one of the first called to testify before the commission, due to the serious accusations he recently made, in which he claimed to have evidence of fraud in Brazilian football results.

However, to date, these accusations have not been proven, and the clubs involved in Textor’s allegations have already announced that they will seek legal redress.
