Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: CBF Sets Up Estúdio do Var’ in CPI Das Betting Session
Brazil.- June 11, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Wilson Seneme, who chairs the CBF Arbitration Commission, implemented an innovative measure in the CPI on Game Manipulation and Sports Betting.
He created a ‘VAR studio’, which is an exact copy of the video referee’s (VAR) work environment, equipped with seven monitors. The objective was to offer senators Jorge Kajuru and Carlos Portinho an immersive experience that reflected the real functioning of the VAR system.
The main objective of creating this space was to clarify how VAR works in practice, offering insights that go beyond the information released during football games.
This topic gains even more importance in a context where sports betting is under scrutiny, making transparency in football even more essential.
In his testimony, Seneme also addressed the accusations of John Textor, majority shareholder of Botafogo, who suggested manipulations in Brazilian Championship games. Seneme vehemently denied these allegations.

He stated: “I give him 0% chance. In my experience, I have not found or identified any action that could be interpreted as manipulation of results.
Arbitration error happens. But turning an error into a report of match-fixing, in my opinion, is an irresponsible attitude.”
Seneme was heard at the CPI on Gambling and Sports Betting Manipulation in the Senate last week. Senator Jorge Kajuru chairs the commission that has already heard other members of the CBF.
The Importance of Var
VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has a significant influence on the results of games, as it was created to support referees in deciding decisive moments, such as doubtful goals, penalties, expulsions and player identification errors.

With the help of VAR, decisions made on the field are more precise, which can directly impact the results of matches and, by extension, the outcome of bets.
Furthermore, VAR has been fundamental in reducing human errors, such as plays that go unnoticed by the referee due to an inadequate position, thus ensuring that decisions are more equitable. It is important to note that the CBF publishes parts of matches where VAR intervened. Source
