Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: More than 11,000 Illegal Betting Sites Blocked
Brazil.- February 12, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The federal government blocked 11,555 irregular betting sites between 2024 and 2025, as reported on 10 February by the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting, which presented the balance of actions for 2024.
Since the beginning of 2024, 68 companies have received authorisation to operate in the fixed odds betting market in Brazil, representing 153 betting brands. It is worth noting that the same company can operate more than one bookmaker brand.
According to the secretariat, the requests for authorisation made by the companies generated revenue of R$2.1 billion.
‘Blocking websites is one of the ways to combat illegal domains, but we know it’s not enough. That’s why we work in partnership with Anatel every day to ensure that these sites are removed quickly. In addition, we are adopting other measures, such as collaborating with financial service providers, since the law prohibits payment institutions from getting involved with these sites. Another action is to monitor advertising related to these platforms,’ said Regis Dudena, secretary of Prizes and Betting.
For this year, the secretariat plans to discuss, through public consultations, the creation of a database of self-excluded citizens banned from placing bets.
