Zona de Azar Indonesia – Indonesia Cracks Down on Online Betting Platforms
Indonesia.- June 26, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Indonesian Gaming Authority has intensified its actions against online gambling platforms. The government adopted a strict stance due to legislation that prohibits this practice in the Southeast Asian country.
Minister and Coordinator of Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto, led the creation of a new task force to crack down on gambling.
Members of the Armed Forces and the National Police Force are part of the team. They focus on blocking access to these overseas platforms, especially network access providers.
“The Bhabinkamtibmas and Babinsa actively monitor the trading of bank accounts used for online gambling, as well as minimarkets that sell credits for recharging online gambling,” commented Tjahjanto.
To intensify measures, the Indonesian Financial Transaction Analysis and Reporting Center carries out a detailed analysis of thousands of suspicious bank accounts linked to iGaming.
Therefore, the agency passes this data to the Criminal Investigation Agency, which then identifies and contacts the holders of the suspicious accounts.
The government granted a period of 30 days for owners to claim ownership of the identified accounts. If no one comes forward, the funds contained in the accounts will be directed to the national treasury.
President of Indonesia adopted strict measures to curb online betting
Incidents linked to online gambling have triggered several criminal cases recently. These cases include domestic violence. For example, a police officer in East Java was involved in a case.
Earlier this month, in Mojokerto, East Java, a police officer attacked her husband’s physical integrity. She discovered he had spent his annual bonus on online gambling.
Additionally, in Jakarta, firefighters and rescue workers saved three individuals in recent weeks. In January, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo promoted changes to the law governing electronic transactions and information.
These changes introduce new provisions involving online gambling, defamation, the dissemination of false information and the distribution of graphic content.
The revised Article 27(2) explicitly prohibits online gambling. It imposes harsh penalties, including up to 10 years in prison and fines that can reach 10 billion rupiah for operators found guilty.
