Betfred Temporarily Pauses Operations in Ireland

Betfred Steps Back from the Irish Market

Ireland.- June 19, 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com Betfred has announced a temporary pause of its operations in Ireland, becoming one of the first major operators to adjust its strategy in response to the country’s new regulatory framework led by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI). The company stated that the decision is linked to the transition toward the new licensing regime.

New Regulatory Environment

Ireland’s gambling industry is undergoing a major transformation following the implementation of the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, which introduces a comprehensive regulatory framework for online and land-based betting. Since February 2026, GRAI has been accepting licence applications, while additional enforcement powers are being rolled out throughout the year.

Betfred confirmed its intention to return to the market once the required regulatory processes have been completed and the necessary approvals have been obtained.

Industry-Wide Transition

The move highlights the challenges operators face as Ireland introduces one of Europe’s most comprehensive gambling regulatory systems. The new framework includes stricter requirements regarding licensing, consumer protection, advertising and responsible gambling.

Technology platforms such as Google have already announced policy changes requiring operators to hold valid Irish licences in order to advertise gambling services within the country.

Awaiting a Return

Industry stakeholders will closely monitor Betfred’s next steps, as well as the response of other international operators adapting to the new regulatory landscape. Ireland is positioning itself as one of Europe’s most tightly regulated gambling markets, with a strong focus on consumer protection and market sustainability.
