Over £110,000 Seized in Illegal Gambling Raids

The enforcement activity formed part of Operations Duxford and Snaresbrook, aimed at tackling unlawful gambling and associated criminal activity.

The raids took place during the nights of 4 and 5 August at premises on London Road in Sheffield and Silver Street in Doncaster.
Alongside the cash, officers recovered gold bars, coins and jewellery, as well as 16 unlicensed betting terminals.
Three individuals were arrested on suspicion of gambling offences, possession of a bladed article and immigration offences.
The joint operation involved South Yorkshire Police, the Gambling Commission, the Yorkshire & Humber Regional and Organised Crime Unit, local authorities and immigration enforcement.

The Gambling Commission recently increased the money-laundering risk rating for the gambling software sector from low to medium, citing in particular the potential for software developed by licensed businesses to be resold or supplied to unlicensed operators.
Peer-to-peer products, including poker and betting exchanges, have also been identified as presenting heightened money-laundering risks.

Inspector Amy Mellor of the South West Neighbourhood Policing Team described the operation as an example of effective multi-agency cooperation.
She warned that enforcement against illegal gambling would continue and highlighted the potential for such activity to fund wider organised crime.
Sue Young, Executive Director of Operations at the Gambling Commission, said:
“Illegal gambling isn’t a victimless crime. Unlicensed operators often have links to wider criminal activity, exploit vulnerable people and undermine legitimate regulated businesses.”
She added:
“This action should send a clear message – if you’re running an illegal gambling operation we will work with police and other partners to shut you down and ensure you face serious consequences.”
