Thailand Takes Illegal Gambling Fight to Social Media Platforms

Thailand.- 9 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Thailand is preparing a new phase of its crackdown on illegal online gambling, with greater focus on social media platforms, search engines, public reporting and cooperation between government agencies.

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society wants to complement large-scale URL blocking with measures designed to reduce the visibility and promotion of illegal operators.

Four Areas of Action

The new strategy is built around four main areas:

  • New public channels for reporting illegal gambling.
  • Stronger cooperation between government bodies.
  • Partnerships with search engines.
  • Working groups to identify and remove gambling content from social media.

The Government says no single agency can effectively tackle the scale of illegal online gambling alone.

TikTok and Meta in Focus

Authorities plan to establish teams responsible for collecting and analysing online content.

Information will then be shared with platforms including TikTok and Meta to request removal of posts, accounts and links associated with illegal gambling operators.

Search Engines Also Targeted

The Ministry also plans to deepen cooperation with search-engine providers.

The aim is to reduce the visibility of illegal gambling websites in search results and make it more difficult for consumers to find those platforms.

Public Reporting

Official Government channels will allow members of the public to report:

  • Illegal websites.
  • Advertising.
  • Promotional links.
  • Social media accounts.
  • Emerging customer-acquisition methods.

Authorities will use the information to strengthen surveillance systems.

Cross-Government Cooperation

The strategy will also involve:

  • Ministry of Education.
  • Ministry of Interior.
  • Law enforcement.
  • Public health organisations.

The objective is to combine digital enforcement with prevention and education around gambling-related harm.

Protecting Young People

Exposure among students and younger audiences is one of the Government’s key concerns.

Officials want to use feedback from these groups to better understand how illegal gambling promotions and websites reach them online.

Nearly One Million URLs Blocked

The initiative follows Thailand’s announcement that it blocked 945,075 URLs linked to online gambling during fiscal 2026.

Of those:

  • 835,207 were blocked through court orders.
  • 109,868 through direct cooperation with digital platforms.

The figures refer to individual URLs rather than necessarily representing separate operators.

Domain Blocking Is Not Enough

The scale of the enforcement activity highlights one of the central challenges of online regulation.

Illegal operators can continually create new pages, domains, accounts and access routes.

Thailand therefore wants to target advertising, discoverability and customer acquisition as well as direct access.

Debate Over Meta Cooperation

The effectiveness of relying on major platforms remains an open question internationally.

Meta has begun working with regulated operators to identify illegal gambling advertising, although it has also faced criticism and legal action in other markets over offshore promotions appearing on its platforms.

More Preventive Strategy

The new approach marks a shift from primarily reactive blocking towards more preventive digital monitoring.

Earlier identification of illegal content and faster information-sharing with technology platforms will be central to the model.

Next Steps or Impact

Thailand will deepen cooperation with social networks, search engines and public bodies to accelerate removal of illegal gambling content.

The challenge will be converting the huge amount of information collected into rapid and sustained action.

After blocking almost one million URLs in a year, the Government is now targeting the channels illegal operators use to advertise and acquire new players.
