Michigan: Detroit Casino Revenue Rises 4.7% in September 2026
United States.- 16 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Detroit’s three commercial casinos generated combined revenue of US$103.55 million in September 2026, according to figures released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB).
Slot machines and table games contributed US$102.78 million, representing 4.7% year-on-year growth, while retail sports betting generated a further US$769,771 in adjusted receipts.
The positive performance was primarily driven by MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino, both of which recorded revenue increases, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown experienced a decline.
Combined Revenue Exceeds US$103 Million
The regulator’s September report highlighted the following figures:
- Total revenue: US$103.55 million.
- Slot machines and table games: US$102.78 million.
- Retail sports betting: US$769,771.
- Year-on-year slots and tables growth: 4.7%.
- Monthly slots and tables change: -5.6%.
- January–September revenue growth: 2.3%.
Although the market improved compared with September 2025, casino gaming revenue declined from August 2026.
The figures reflect continued annual growth alongside monthly fluctuations in land-based gambling activity.
MGM Grand Detroit Maintains Market Leadership
MGM Grand Detroit remained the city’s largest commercial casino by gaming revenue.
During September, the property recorded:
- Slot and table game revenue: US$48.84 million.
- Year-on-year growth: 6.5%.
- Market share: 47%.
The results strengthened MGM’s position within Detroit’s land-based casino market.
The property accounted for almost half of the combined revenue generated by the three commercial casinos.
MotorCity Records Strongest Annual Growth
MotorCity Casino delivered the strongest year-on-year performance among Detroit’s three properties.
Its principal figures were:
- Revenue: US$32.6 million.
- Year-on-year growth: 12.7%.
- Market share: 32%.
The improvement increased MotorCity’s relative position within the Detroit market.
Its growth exceeded both MGM’s performance and the combined market average.
The results also helped offset the revenue decline recorded by Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown Declines 8.8%
Unlike its competitors, Hollywood Casino at Greektown reported lower revenue during September.
The property recorded:
- Revenue: US$21.34 million.
- Year-on-year change: -8.8%.
- Market share: 21%.
This represented the weakest performance among Detroit’s three commercial casinos.
While MGM and MotorCity increased their revenues compared with the previous year, Greektown continued facing challenges in recovering its earlier levels of activity.
Retail Sports Betting Handle Reaches US$12.39 Million
Retail sports betting also contributed to September’s market performance.
The three casinos recorded a combined sports wagering handle of US$12.39 million.
Key indicators included:
- Total handle: US$12.39 million.
- Gross receipts: US$784,762.
- Qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR): US$769,771.
- Year-on-year QAGR growth: 3%.
- Monthly QAGR change: -10.9%.
Although adjusted sports betting receipts increased compared with September 2025, they declined from August 2026.
Retail sports betting accounted for a relatively small proportion of the casinos’ combined revenue.
MotorCity Leads Retail Sports Betting Revenue
The distribution of adjusted sports wagering receipts varied significantly between operators.
MotorCity Casino
- Adjusted receipts: US$602,755.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown
- Adjusted receipts: US$215,281.
MGM Grand Detroit
- Adjusted result: -US$48,265.
MotorCity accounted for most of the segment’s positive adjusted receipts.
MGM, meanwhile, recorded a negative result, illustrating how sporting outcomes can affect bookmakers’ monthly profitability.
Michigan Collects US$8.3 Million in Gaming Taxes
Detroit’s commercial casinos also generated substantial tax contributions during September.
According to the MGCB:
- State taxes on slots and table games: US$8.3 million.
- Payments to the City of Detroit: US$12.7 million.
- State taxes from retail sports betting: US$30,922.
- City sports betting taxes: US$37,793.
Payments to Detroit include wagering taxes and obligations arising from development agreements with casino operators.
Compared with September 2025, state taxes from slot machines and table games increased from US$8 million.
Land-based gambling continues to represent an important source of public revenue.
Operating Licences Renewed
The latest results follow the Michigan Gaming Control Board’s decision to renew the operating licences of Detroit’s three commercial casinos.
The renewals were approved unanimously at the regulator’s meeting on 8 September 2026.
Before granting approval, the MGCB reviewed:
- Each property’s financial position.
- Operational practices.
- Regulatory compliance.
- Responsible gambling policies.
- Consumer protection procedures.
Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, highlighted the regulator’s commitment to maintaining integrity and effective supervision across Michigan’s gambling industry.
Fantasy Sports Also Generate Revenue
The regulatory report also included figures for August 2026 concerning fantasy sports contest operators.
During that month, the segment recorded:
- Adjusted revenues: US$657,854.
- Taxes paid: US$55,260.
These figures relate to a different reporting period because fantasy sports operators are subject to separate reporting deadlines.
The activity represents another gambling-related segment supervised by the MGCB.
Land-Based Market Performance
September’s results demonstrate significant differences between Detroit’s major casino operators.
While MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino reported annual revenue increases of 6.5% and 12.7%, respectively, Hollywood Casino at Greektown recorded an 8.8% decline.
Despite these contrasting performances, combined slot and table game revenues exceeded September 2025 levels.
The 2.3% increase recorded during the first nine months of 2026 also indicates positive year-on-year performance across the land-based market.
However, the 5.6% monthly decline demonstrates that short-term activity continues to fluctuate.
Next Steps and Impact
September’s figures confirm that Detroit’s commercial casinos continue recording year-on-year revenue growth, primarily supported by MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino.
With US$103.55 million in combined revenue, the properties remain important contributors to Michigan’s land-based gambling industry.
The generation of US$8.3 million in state gaming taxes and US$12.7 million in payments to Detroit further demonstrates the sector’s economic contribution.
Over the coming months, casino performance will depend on land-based gambling activity, sporting outcomes and individual operators’ commercial strategies.
Continued licensing and MGCB supervision provide the regulatory framework for operators to maintain their activities and pursue further commercial development.
