Brazil’s Superior Court urges Civil Police to conclude prolonged inquiry
Brazil.- July 31, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice (STJ) has formally demanded that Santa Catarina’s Civil Police expedite the investigation into alleged match-fixing during the 2018 Copa Santa Catarina, involving six suspects, including businessman Sergio Alan Garcia Buettgen.
The case has been open since November 2018, prompting Buettgen’s defense to file a habeas corpus motion claiming excessive delay and unlawful constraint. Although the request was denied, Minister Rogério Schietti Cruz, the case’s rapporteur, acknowledged the extraordinary length of the investigation.
While the complexity of the case, involving multiple states and technical procedures, and the impact of the pandemic were recognized, Schietti insisted that the inquiry must be concluded swiftly.
All suspects remain free as legal pressure mounts for a resolution in one of Brazil’s longest-running sports integrity investigations.
