Brazil: Senator Approves Restrictions on Sports Betting Advertising

Brazil.- May 30, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), in a speech this Thursday (29), highlighted the approval of a bill that restricts advertising of fixed-odds sports betting, commonly known as bets. The text prohibits advertisements featuring athletes, artists, influencers, communicators, and public officials. Bill PL 2.985/2023 now proceeds to the House of Representatives for review.
Soraya stated that the bill aims to combat money laundering, currency evasion, and the social impacts of betting. She praised the leadership of Senate President Davi Alcolumbre in handling the proposal and urged the House to also move forward on the issue.
— The president [Davi Alcolumbre] showed admirable courage; he faced pressure but stood firm. We approved the urgency regime, and yesterday we managed to limit [advertising] as much as possible — hopefully one day we’ll fully restrict it. But just the fact that we no longer allow people to promote bets is already a major step forward. I hope the House shows the same dignity as this Chamber, the same courage to face a giant that, unfortunately, has ties to organized crime — she said.
The senator also commented on a Federal Police operation investigating a group suspected of selling espionage and contract killing services, targeting members of parliament and high court justices. She expressed concern over the safety of authorities and public servants.
— We cannot, under any circumstances, think this is just rhetoric, or a lie, or downplay its seriousness. Everyone here and those around us are also at risk. When institutions are attacked, when people invade the headquarters of all three branches of government, how do other countries, how does the world see us? As a fragile country, a vulnerable country, an unsafe country — a country whose democracy is still unstable, not yet solidified. That is how others see us — she stated.
