Denmark August GGR Falls 7.1% as Sports Betting Revenue Drops Sharply

Denmark.- 13 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Denmark’s regulated gambling market recorded a 7.1% year-on-year decline in August 2026, with total gross gaming revenue reaching DKK678 million, approximately US$101.6 million.

The main driver of the decline was a sharp fall in sports betting revenue, while online casino maintained positive momentum and remained the country’s largest liberalised gambling vertical.

Sports Betting Falls 42.7%

Sports betting GGR reached DKK132 million during August.

On a GDP-adjusted basis, this represented a 42.7% year-on-year decline.

The result contrasts with July, when the segment had recorded 21.3% growth.

Online Casino Rises 12.5%

Online casino continued to grow.

The segment generated DKK415 million in GGR, representing a GDP-adjusted increase of 12.5% year-on-year.

It remained the largest source of revenue within Denmark’s liberalised gambling market.

Online Casino Accounts for More Than 60%

With DKK415 million out of total market GGR of DKK678 million, online casino accounted for more than 60% of August gambling revenue.

The figure underlines the growing importance of the vertical within Denmark.

Gaming Machines Broadly Stable

Gaming machines generated approximately DKK95 million.

On an adjusted basis, revenue was down 2.6% compared with August 2025.

Land-Based Casinos Up 8.7%

Land-based casinos posted positive growth.

GGR reached DKK34 million, representing an 8.7% year-on-year increase.

Bingo Also Grows

Land-based bingo generated approximately DKK3 million.

That represented growth of 6.4% from the same month last year.

Sharp Change From July

August followed a very different pattern from the previous month.

In July 2026, total gambling spend had increased by 17.2%, driven by growth across both sports betting and online casino.

The sharp correction in betting during August was enough to push the overall market back into decline.

GDP-Adjusted Reporting

Spillemyndigheden recently introduced a new methodology allowing market comparisons to be adjusted for changes in Denmark’s GDP.

The regulator says this provides a clearer view of underlying gambling-spend trends against broader economic changes.

ROFUS Above 74,000

As of 1 September 2026, 74,714 people were registered with ROFUS, Denmark’s voluntary gambling self-exclusion register.

The system allows consumers to block their access to licensed gambling operators.

Regulatory Context

The figures arrive as Denmark also moves ahead with a broader reform of its gambling rules.

The Government recently introduced Bill L 37, including tighter advertising restrictions, stronger player-protection requirements and additional tools against illegal operators.

Next Steps or Impact

The coming months will show whether August’s sports betting decline was mainly seasonal or reflects a more persistent slowdown.

For now, online casino continues to offset some of the weakness in betting and reinforce its position as the dominant vertical within Denmark’s regulated market.
