Flutter Announces Up to 1,400 Job Cuts Amid UK Tax Pressures
United Kingdom.- 21 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Flutter Entertainment, one of the world’s leading betting and online gaming groups, has announced a restructuring of its UK and Ireland operations that could result in the loss of up to 1,400 jobs.
The decision, announced on 20 October 2026, follows substantial increases in gambling taxation introduced in the UK’s 2025 Autumn Budget.
Flutter estimates that implementing the restructuring will cost between US$80 million and US$90 million, with the expense expected to be recognised during the fourth quarter of 2026.
Scope of the Restructuring
The proposed redundancies will affect several areas of Flutter’s business and remain subject to employee consultation.
The main locations involved include:
- Leeds, United Kingdom.
- Dublin, Ireland.
- Porto, Portugal.
- Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Flutter employs approximately 28,500 people worldwide, including around 9,000 employees within its UK and Ireland division.
The proposed job reductions represent approximately 15.6% of the division’s workforce.
According to the company, the restructuring could affect virtually every business function.
Higher Gambling Taxes Drive Cost Reductions
The announcement follows the increase in Remote Gaming Duty from 21% to 40%, which took effect on 1 April 2026.
Kevin Harrington, CEO of Flutter’s UK and Ireland division, explained that the new taxation framework had substantially changed the economic conditions facing regulated gambling operators.
He stated that the company could not fully absorb tax increases of this magnitude without reducing its fixed cost base.
Nevertheless, Harrington expressed confidence in Flutter’s competitive position and its ability to benefit from its scale in the British market.
Other Operators Also Announce Reductions
Flutter is not the only gambling company implementing cost-saving measures in response to changing market conditions.
Recent developments include:
- Betfred announcing plans to close up to 132 betting shops and reduce its workforce by more than 600 employees.
- Evoke, the owner of William Hill, closing approximately 200 retail locations.
- bet365 announcing plans to eliminate around 340 positions.
Flutter also previously confirmed that it was reviewing the potential closure of up to 100 Paddy Power betting shops.
Meanwhile, the industry is closely monitoring proposals to increase Machine Games Duty to 40%, which could feature in the forthcoming UK Budget.
Next Steps and Impact
The UK Government is scheduled to present its next Budget on 28 October 2026, amid growing concerns among regulated gambling operators.
Future taxation decisions could influence employment, retail operations and investment across the sector.
Flutter’s restructuring highlights the challenges facing major gambling companies as they adapt to higher taxation and an evolving regulatory environment.
