Grêmio Urges Supreme Court to Allow Betting Sponsorship Transition

Brazil.- 5 November 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense has asked Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court (STF) to establish a transition period allowing football clubs to adapt to the prohibition of sports betting and related sponsorship agreements.

During the public hearing held on 3 November 2026, Eduardo Schumacher, Vice-President of Grêmio’s Administrative Council, warned that the ten-day period established under Provisional Measure 1,394/2026 was insufficient for clubs to replace their betting sponsors.

The club proposed a gradual approach that would balance public health protection with the financial stability of Brazilian football.

Grêmio Challenges the Ten-Day Deadline

Addressing the STF, Schumacher argued that the debate should not focus exclusively on whether sports betting should continue.

He explained that authorities must also determine how the transition should be implemented and how clubs can replace existing sources of commercial revenue.

According to Grêmio, an immediate withdrawal could create significant financial difficulties for sporting institutions.

The club believes existing sponsorship agreements require appropriate transition arrangements to avoid sudden disruption.

Proposal to Distinguish Sports Betting from Online Casinos

Grêmio advocated an intermediate solution for Brazil’s gambling market.

Its proposal would maintain restrictions on online casino gambling while allowing sports betting to be considered separately under stricter regulatory conditions.

Suggested measures include:

  • Restrictions on gambling advertising.
  • Stronger protection for children and adolescents.
  • Oversight of authorised operators.
  • A transition period for existing sponsorship contracts.

The objective is to address gambling-related risks without creating an immediate financial shock for football clubs.

International Examples from England, Italy and Belgium

Schumacher cited international precedents to demonstrate that restrictions on gambling sponsorship can be introduced gradually.

The examples included:

  • England: Premier League clubs agreed to voluntarily remove betting brands from the front of their shirts from the 2026/2027 season.
  • Italy: a twelve-month transition period was introduced for certain existing contracts.
  • Belgium: restrictions on betting sponsorship involving professional clubs are scheduled for January 2028.

The executive argued that these examples demonstrate the importance of providing sufficient time for commercial agreements to be reorganised.

He contrasted these arrangements with the ten-day deadline introduced in Brazil.

Financial Consequences for Grêmio

The club also highlighted its own experience to illustrate the challenges involved in securing replacement sponsors.

Grêmio had announced a principal sponsorship agreement with Pitaco, reportedly worth approximately BRL140 million over three seasons.

However, the introduction of Provisional Measure 1,394/2026 resulted in the agreement being suspended.

The club subsequently secured Banrisul as its main shirt sponsor until December 2026.

Schumacher also recalled that Grêmio had previously spent almost a year without a principal sponsor because of difficulties finding companies prepared to invest comparable amounts.

Public Health Remains a Priority

Grêmio’s representative emphasised that the club does not dismiss the social problems associated with gambling.

Instead, he acknowledged the need for measures to prevent gambling-related harm and protect consumers.

Nevertheless, he argued that these objectives should be combined with an orderly transition for sporting institutions.

The club’s position seeks to balance public health measures with the need to maintain commercial and financial stability.

Supreme Court Examines Provisional Measure 1,394/2026

The public hearing was convened as part of legal proceedings concerning the regulation and prohibition of betting in Brazil.

These include Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 8027, filed by the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL).

Justice Luiz Fux is gathering evidence from government representatives, sporting organisations and gambling industry associations to inform the Court’s examination.

The hearing is an information-gathering exercise and does not constitute a final decision on the constitutionality of the prohibition.

Industry Impact and Next Steps

Grêmio’s intervention brings the financial consequences of an immediate withdrawal of betting sponsorship into the judicial debate.

The club believes regulatory measures should include reasonable transition periods to protect the stability of sporting institutions.

With a ten-day deadline considered insufficient and a BRL140 million sponsorship agreement suspended, Grêmio is asking the Supreme Court to allow a gradual transition for Brazilian football to adapt to new betting restrictions.

The next developments will depend on decisions taken by the Federal Supreme Court and the evolution of Brazil’s regulatory framework.
