NBA Restricts Sports Bets and Parlays to Protect Sporting Integrity
United States.- 20 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com The NBA has announced new restrictions on certain sports betting markets to protect the integrity of its competitions and prevent potential manipulation.
On 16 October 2026, the league distributed a memorandum to authorised sportsbook partners, including FanDuel and DraftKings, requesting the removal of betting products considered particularly vulnerable.
The measures will apply during the 2026–2027 season, beginning on 20 October, and the NBA hopes to extend similar safeguards to prediction markets.
Betting Markets and Parlays Facing Restrictions
The NBA has identified several categories presenting heightened risks of manipulation.
The principal restrictions include:
- Same-player under parlays: combinations involving bets that an individual player will remain below specified statistical thresholds.
- Opening-tip wagers: markets predicting which team or player will win the opening possession.
- First-action bets: wagers involving the first basket, three-pointer, rebound, assist, steal or block.
- Limited-minutes players: under bets involving athletes expected to play fewer than 12 minutes.
- Missed-shot wagers: contracts linked to specific missed attempts during a game.
The league believes these products can be particularly susceptible to individual player behaviour and potential manipulation.
Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier Cases
The restrictions follow recent investigations involving alleged sports betting irregularities.
One prominent case concerns Jontay Porter, the former NBA player who received a lifetime ban in 2024 for violating the league’s gambling rules.
Another case involves Terry Rozier, who faces allegations relating to betting activity connected with his performance in a 2023 game.
Rozier has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
These incidents prompted the NBA to review betting markets where individual player actions can significantly influence wagering outcomes.
Executive Comments and Operator Response
Scott Kaufman-Ross, NBA Executive Vice President, explained that the league is seeking a balance between removing problematic betting products and avoiding the displacement of customers towards illegal gambling platforms.
Meanwhile, FanDuel confirmed its willingness to implement the restrictions and emphasised the importance of cooperation between professional sports leagues and regulated operators.
The NBA will also strengthen its sports betting education programmes and monitoring systems designed to identify suspicious activity.
Next Steps and Impact
The NBA hopes to introduce comparable restrictions across prediction markets, where participants trade contracts linked to sporting events.
However, the absence of direct commercial partnerships with certain prediction market platforms complicates the implementation of such measures.
The league’s objective is to reduce opportunities for manipulation without undermining the regulated sports betting market.
For the iGaming industry, the new requirements represent a move towards closer scrutiny of player-specific betting markets and parlays, with sporting integrity remaining the central priority.
