Pix Transactions Fall 10% Following Brazil Betting Ban
Brazil.- 2 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com The number of Pix transactions fell by 10% during the three days following publication of Brazil’s online betting ban.
Between 26 and 28 September, 608.6 million transactions were recorded, below the average seen on the same weekdays during the previous four weeks.
What the 10% Decline Measures
The decline specifically refers to the number of Pix transactions.
It does not directly represent the financial value transferred through the system or show how much of the activity was connected to betting.
The figures cover transactions settled through Brazil’s Instant Payment System.
Daily Results
Compared with the average for the previous four Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays:
- Saturday 26: 229.6 million transactions, down 11%.
- Sunday 27: 165.9 million, down 12%.
- Monday 28: 213 million, down 7.4%.
The three-day total reached 608.6 million transactions.
Transaction Value Also Falls
The amount of money transferred via Pix also declined.
A total of R$183.58 billion moved through the system across the three days, representing a 15.5% decline compared with the equivalent days of the previous week.
Daily Values
Transaction values were:
- Saturday: R$33.23 billion.
- Sunday: R$18.87 billion.
- Monday: R$131.48 billion.
The respective declines were 10%, 20.6% and 16%.
Timing With the Betting Ban
The fall occurred immediately after publication of Provisional Measure 1,394/2026.
The measure prohibited the operation, offering, intermediation and advertising of online betting and immediately stopped new deposits and wagers.
No Proven Causal Link
The figures alone do not establish that the betting ban directly caused the Pix decline.
Other factors can influence daily payment activity, including consumption patterns, payment cycles and general banking behaviour.
The relationship between the two developments therefore remains unproven.
Government Interpretation
Federal officials suggested that part of the decline may reflect money that had previously been sent to betting platforms.
However, there is currently no transaction-level breakdown confirming how much of the change came specifically from gambling payments.
Pix and Betting
Pix had become one of the main payment methods used by betting operators in Brazil.
Its speed, 24-hour availability and low friction made it a central part of the country’s regulated betting ecosystem.
New Deposits Stopped
The Provisional Measure immediately prevented new deposits and wagers.
Customers may still withdraw remaining account balances until 5 October.
From 6 October, betting websites and apps are required to go offline.
Industry Context
Pix activity is one of the first economic indicators to shift following the regulatory change.
Other recent data has also shown movement in iGaming demand, affiliate activity and offshore operator visibility.
Next Steps or Impact
A longer observation period will be required to determine whether Pix transaction volumes remain lower once regulated betting platforms fully leave the market.
October data should provide a clearer indication of how much payment activity was genuinely linked to betting.
For now, the figures show a significant post-ban decline but do not prove a direct causal relationship.
