PointsBet Agrees to Two-Day Ontario Suspension Over Suspicious Betting
Canada.- 22 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com PointsBet Canada has reached a settlement with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), agreeing to a two-day suspension of its online gambling operations in the Canadian province.
Announced on 20 October 2026, the agreement concludes regulatory proceedings concerning alleged failures to identify and report suspicious betting activity linked to former NBA player Jontay Porter.
The regulator had originally proposed a five-day suspension, but the penalty was reduced following negotiations between the two parties.
The Jontay Porter Betting Case
The investigation concerns a sports betting manipulation scheme involving Jontay Porter, a former Toronto Raptors player.
In 2024, the NBA banned Porter for life after finding that he had breached its gambling integrity rules.
The AGCO subsequently reviewed the monitoring procedures employed by licensed sportsbook operators in Ontario.
In February 2026, the regulator announced its intention to suspend PointsBet for five days, alleging systemic shortcomings in its ability to monitor, detect, document and report suspicious betting patterns.
Settlement Reduces Suspension
PointsBet initially challenged the proposed penalty and appealed to the Licence Appeal Tribunal, an independent body responsible for reviewing certain administrative decisions in Ontario.
A hearing was scheduled to begin on 19 October, but the parties reached an agreement before the proceedings continued.
The settlement includes:
- A two-day suspension of PointsBet’s Ontario gaming website.
- An independent audit of its internal controls.
- An auditor and audit methodology approved by the AGCO.
- Corrective measures addressing any identified deficiencies.
- Independent validation of the improvements implemented.
The precise dates of the suspension have not yet been announced.
Strengthening Regulatory Compliance
The settlement also aims to improve PointsBet’s ability to identify potential irregularities in sports betting.
The independent audit will examine the operator’s internal monitoring procedures and its compliance with regulatory reporting obligations.
When the original suspension was proposed, Scott Vanderwel, CEO of PointsBet Canada, expressed disappointment with the regulator’s decision.
He argued that the proposed sanction was disproportionate in light of the company’s corrective actions and compliance record.
Nevertheless, PointsBet has now accepted the reduced suspension and additional oversight requirements.
A Significant Regulatory Precedent
The settlement represents an important development for Ontario, constituting the first temporary suspension imposed on an iGaming operator as a regulatory penalty in the province.
The case also highlights the importance of effective sporting integrity systems in preventing betting-related misconduct.
Licensed operators are expected to maintain appropriate procedures for identifying suspicious transactions and promptly reporting potential irregularities.
Next Steps and Industry Impact
PointsBet must coordinate the implementation of its suspension with the AGCO and complete the agreed independent audit.
The regulator will oversee the corrective measures and require external validation of the improvements.
For Canada’s iGaming industry, the case reinforces the importance of regulatory compliance, sporting integrity and cooperation between operators and authorities.
The resolution demonstrates that effective supervision involves not only providing a secure betting environment but also ensuring suspicious activity is identified and reported appropriately.
