Spain Sets Cross-Operator Online Gambling Deposit Limits for 2027
Spain.- 22 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Spain’s Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) has unveiled the implementation timetable for two major initiatives designed to strengthen online gambling consumer protection.
The measures include a Joint Deposit Limits System and a new Player Portal, allowing consumers to monitor their gambling activity across different licensed operators.
Announced on 21 October 2026, the initiatives form part of the regulatory reforms overseen by Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda.
New Limits Across All Licensed Operators
The most significant development is the introduction of deposit limits that will apply collectively across all authorised online gambling platforms.
The default thresholds will be:
- €700 per day.
- €1,750 per week.
- €3,300 over four weeks.
Unlike the previous framework, where limits were managed separately by each operator, the new system will calculate deposits made by an individual across the entire regulated market.
Once a customer reaches an applicable threshold, further deposits will be blocked across all participating operators.
The combined limits will operate alongside existing controls applied by individual gambling companies.
Limit Adjustments and Data Protection
Players will be able to modify or remove their combined limits through a dedicated procedure providing additional information about gambling-related risks.
However, safeguards will apply to prevent impulsive changes:
- A three-working-day waiting period before increases or removals become effective.
- A maximum of one limit increase every three months.
- Centralised technology checking deposits in real time.
The DGOJ explained that the infrastructure has been designed to minimise unnecessary data exchanges between operators while protecting customers’ personal information.
New Player Portal
The second initiative is the Player Portal, a digital service designed to centralise information concerning gambling activity.
Consumers will be able to review:
- Deposits and amounts wagered.
- Winnings and losses.
- Activity histories and aggregated statistics.
- Gambling accounts registered in their name.
- Customisable spending and activity alerts.
- Management of combined deposit limits.
- Downloadable activity certificates covering complete tax years.
The service will be available free of charge through Spain’s Cl@ve digital identification system.
One important feature will allow consumers to identify accounts opened in their name without their knowledge, helping detect potential identity theft.
Implementation Timetable and Operator Requirements
The DGOJ has begun testing the joint deposit limits system during 2026.
The Ministry is targeting 26 March 2027 for its definitive implementation.
All licensed online gambling operators in Spain will be required to integrate their platforms with the centralised infrastructure.
Mikel Arana, Director General of the DGOJ, recently criticised delays by some operators in completing the necessary technical connections.
Speaking at the Gaming in Spain Conference in Madrid, Arana defended the regulator’s reform programme and emphasised that technological adaptation remained the responsibility of licensees.
Industry representatives, meanwhile, have raised concerns about insufficient technical guidance and consultation during the development of the projects.
Industry Impact and Next Steps
The introduction of joint deposit limits represents a significant change to Spain’s online gambling consumer protection framework.
The system aims to prevent individuals from circumventing spending limits by distributing deposits across multiple operators.
Together with the Player Portal, the measures are intended to strengthen transparency, individual control over gambling activity and the detection of potential irregularities.
For the iGaming industry, the reforms will introduce additional technological integration and regulatory compliance requirements ahead of March 2027.
