Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: SBT Gives Up on Brasileirao Exclusive Games Package

Brazil.- August 1, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com  SBT officially announced that it has withdrawn its proposal to acquire a package of 38 games from the clubs that make up the Liga Forte União (LFU) for broadcast on open TV. The broadcaster does not reveal the values offered.

According to Máquinia do Esporte, however, SBT was negotiating a contract for just three years, unlike the teams in the Brazilian Football League (Libra), which have already sold their matches on all platforms to Grupo Globo for five seasons (20125 to 2029).

“The broadcaster’s leadership was informed, by phone and unofficially, that their proposal would not be approved and was awaiting formal feedback from the organizers by the end of this Monday afternoon (29/7) regarding the result of this competition. As it did not happen, we communicate that SBT has decided to withdraw its proposal from this sporting election”, informed the channel, through an official note.

No agreement

Less than a year before the start of Brasileirão 2025, the LFU, currently made up of 12 Series A clubs, still does not have any agreement to sell broadcasting rights for its games. The group was strengthened with the arrival of Corinthians, who entered the LFU at the beginning of the month.

To leave Libra and go to LFU, Timão received an advance of R$150 million paid by XP Investimentos, a partner of Forte União. Of this amount, R$25 million was released upon signing the contract. The remainder will be released within 30 days.

Based on the current classification in Series A and B of the Brasileirão, Libra would maintain its representation of eight teams, with the fall of Vitória and the accession of Santos, leader of the second division.

The LFU would lose three teams (Cuiabá, Fluminense and Atlético-GO), but would see three other members rise to the elite (Novorizontino, Mirassol and Vila Nova). Of course, by December, a lot can change.

Globo could be interested in one of the packages offered by LFU. However, to date the proposal has not been formalized.

With the rights it currently holds, Grupo Globo guarantees around four games per round in its schedule. If you broadcast one match on Globo and another on Sportv, the pay-per-view on Premiere would be extremely dehydrated, with only two exclusive games, on average, each round.

SBT, in turn, despite having withdrawn the proposal, would not have definitively given up on featuring games from LFU teams. The broadcaster will wait to see how the Forte União negotiations unfold to possibly resume talks.

Schedule

Without the Brasileirão, SBT has other important sporting attractions in its programming schedule. The broadcaster renewed an agreement with UEFA to broadcast the Champions League. The new contract provides for games to be shown on Tuesdays throughout the tournament, in addition to the final, which takes place on Saturday. The new bond runs from 2025/2025 to 2026/2027.

The channel also shows the Copa Sudamericana, Conmebol’s second most important club tournament. The current contract began this year and runs until 2026. During the tournament, SBT has games on Tuesdays, in addition to the final, played on Saturday.

Regionally, the channel also holds the rights to broadcast the Copa do Nordeste. The competition is shown by SBT affiliates in all states in the region, with the exception of Sergipe. The current agreement runs until 2025.
