Brazil.- January 10, 2025 www.zonadeazar.com The Supreme Federal Court (STF) is expected to discuss the constitutionality of betting operations in Brazil by April 2025. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) questions the current legislation, citing a lack of mechanisms to protect fundamental rights.

The regulation of the sector, initiated under the Lula administration in January 2025, has faced criticism since 2024, including concerns about the use of Bolsa Família funds for betting and the absence of support programs for gambling addiction.

Various sectors highlight flaws in the legislation’s drafting, which was primarily led by the Ministry of Finance without addressing social and health aspects. In response to criticism, the STF has already prohibited the use of Bolsa Família funds for betting and banned advertising targeted at minors.

Despite challenges in blocking user bets and illegal websites, the betting industry remains optimistic about the STF discussions. Companies also face pressure due to measures such as the list of authorized operators and the prohibition of credit card usage, introduced to expedite regulations and prevent legislative setbacks.
