Zona de Azar Malta – Romanian Player Makes History with First European Poker Tour Win
Malta.- 2th March 2023 www.zonadeazar.com The European Poker Tour (EPT) has a Romanian champion for the first time in its history. Razvan Belea defeated Sweden’s Peter Jorgne in heads-up play to win and took home the EPT Sochi Main Event trophy, earning himself a prize of €1.7 million. He fought his way through a field of 758 entries to claim victory in the prestigious tournament.
Belea, led the last day’s chip count and outlasted his final four opponents to continue an amazing run. After Days 4 and 5, he maintained the lead throughout the action-packed conclusion. He expressed his disbelief that his dream had come true. He had watched European Poker Tours for a long time and had always aspired to win one.
Razvan Belea was overwhelmed with emotions and struggled to find the right words to describe the experience. Despite this, he emphasised that he had worked hard towards his goal, putting in countless hours studying and playing poker. He also expressed his gratitude to his supporters and his excitement for the future of poker in Romania.
Speaking to SiGMA News about this impressive win, Ivonne Montealegre Founder & Event Director of The Malta Poker Festival stated; “I am thrilled for all Romanian players as their very own Razvan Belea conquered the EPT Paris Main Event Championship this 2023 for almost 2 million euros. It’s a powerful story. He comes from an online qualifier and has conquered the live event field. I have seen more young players from Eastern Europe in recent years and Razvan’s win is a win for all; it means that dreams do come true. It is very inspiring.
He is the first Romanian to take down an EPT (European Poker Tour) and his story will have a crucial impact on the growth of poker in the region. We will see more eastern European players at the tables and daring to jump in bigger buy-ins and events that before looked like a distant dream. With this life-changing win, he will be able to play at a very competitive level without the pressures that higher stakes bring. I wish him many more triumphs in the poker felts. I am delighted to see the underdogs win!”
The victory is seen as a significant moment for Romanian poker, with many hoping that it will encourage more people in the region to take up the game. The event was also notable for its high level of diversity, with players from over 60 countries taking part. The EPT is one of the most prestigious poker tournaments in the world, and its Sochi Main Event is widely regarded as one of the most challenging tournaments on the circuit.
