Puerto Rico: Historic District Casino Opens In San Juan

Puerto Rico.– May 07, 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com  Grupo Orenes has inaugurated the first casino located in the historic district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, through an USD 11 million investment and a new boutique-style concept focused on tourism, entertainment and gastronomy.

Puerto Rico reaches a new milestone for its gaming industry with the opening of the first casino in Old San Juan. The project was developed by Grupo Orenes as part of the renovation of Hotel Rumbao and aims to transform the tourism and nightlife offering within the historic centre of Puerto Rico’s capital city.

Details / Context

The first phase of Gran Casino Viejo San Juan includes 64 slot machines and 10 gaming tables featuring blackjack, mini baccarat EZ, American roulette, craps and World Poker Tour Heads Up. The project is expected to generate around 200 jobs between direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Unlike traditional casino models in Puerto Rico, the new venue introduces a boutique concept with European inspiration, integrating gaming, gastronomy and entertainment into a single experience. The project also features “El Bembé”, a bar led by chef Michael Bartemes, alongside partnerships with local brands such as Ocean Lab.

The development forms part of the renovation of Hotel Rumbao led by Driftwood Capital, which acquired the property in 2021 for USD 33 million.

Impact

The opening strengthens the tourism and commercial positioning of Old San Juan, expanding entertainment options in one of the Caribbean’s most iconic historic districts. The new boutique model also reflects an international trend in which casinos increasingly integrate premium experiences, gastronomy and entertainment beyond traditional gaming.
