Brazil: Investigation into Possible Match-Fixing in the Espírito Santo Cup

Brazil.—September 12, 2026 www.zonadeazar.com The Espírito Santo Civil Police are investigating possible match-fixing linked to sports betting in a match from the 2026 Espírito Santo Cup, played in late May.

The investigation began after authorities detected an excessive and unusual volume of bets that at least three goals would be scored during the first half. That exact scenario ended up occurring during the match.

As part of the operation, authorities executed six search and seizure warrants targeting players, the coach, the director, and the president of the same club, as well as a players’ agent. The raids took place in various locations in Espírito Santo as well as in Igarassu, Pernambuco.

During the raids, cell phones, computers, and documents were seized; these will now be analyzed to determine whether there is evidence to shed light on possible match-fixing and identify those responsible.

According to ge, the details released by the police correspond to the Vitória-ES 5–0 Sport-ES match, played on May 27, which ended 3–0 at halftime. However, the Civil Police have not officially confirmed that this is the match under investigation nor revealed the identities of those under investigation.

The case once again brings to the forefront the role of monitoring betting patterns as a tool for detecting potential threats to the integrity of sports.
