Brazil: Senator Girão Questions STF’s Role in CBF Case

Brazil – April 4, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), in a speech in the Plenary this Wednesday (2), criticized the role of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in the case involving the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). The senator alleged a possible conflict of interest in the decision of Minister Gilmar Mendes, who ordered the reinstatement of Ednaldo Rodrigues as president of the entity. Girão highlighted that, months before the injunction, the CBF signed a contract with the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development, and Research (IDP), which is linked to the minister himself.

— What bothers me is the signing of a contract with the institution linked to the STF minister, who later ruled on a crucial case regarding the retention of the presidency of the entity with which this partnership was established. The close timing between the signing of the contract and the STF’s decision further worsens the perception of a potential conflict of interest — he stated.

Girão also criticized the relationship between clubs, federations, and betting companies. He claimed that the presence of these companies in national championships has led to social harm, causing fans to fall into debt, and questioned the reliability of match results.

— Série A, Série B, and the Copa do Brasil are directly sponsored by betting companies, which have turned our main teams into hostages of this money. Things are not going well for our football. Today, you can’t watch a game without questioning whether the results are being manipulated — he declared.
