Buenos Aires Creates Special Unit for Mar del Plata Casino Complex

Argentina.- 16 September 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com The Government of Buenos Aires Province has formally created the Bahía Bristol Coordination Unit, a new body designed to oversee and coordinate the management and redevelopment of the historic Mar del Plata complex that includes the Central Casino, the seafront promenade and the Provincial Hotel.

The measure was established through Decree 1516/2026, with the new unit operating under the provincial Ministry of Government.

Integrated Management of the Site

The initiative responds to the need for closer coordination between the different provincial bodies involved in one of Mar del Plata’s most important tourism and heritage areas.

Bahía Bristol combines public infrastructure, tourism activity, architectural heritage and one of the province’s most important state-run casinos.

Central Casino as a Strategic Asset

The Central Casino is a key component of the development.

Beyond its historical and architectural significance, it remains one of Argentina’s most recognisable land-based gaming properties and an important part of Mar del Plata’s tourism proposition.

The direct involvement of the provincial gaming regulator reinforces the role of gaming within the new structure.

IPLyC Joins the Inter-Institutional Committee

The unit will include an advisory committee featuring the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos, IPLyC.

Other participating bodies are:

  • Ministry of Government.
  • Ministry of Production, Science and Technological Innovation.
  • Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Services.
  • Ministry of Economy.
  • Ministry of Security.
  • General Directorate of Culture and Education and the Cultural Institute.

The model brings different areas of provincial government into a single coordination framework.

Tourism, Gaming and Heritage

The new body’s remit extends beyond casino operations.

Infrastructure, security, tourism, economic activity and heritage preservation will all require coordination.

The Province is therefore treating Bahía Bristol as an integrated urban complex rather than a collection of separately managed buildings.

ARS23 Billion Investment

The new management structure accompanies a public-works programme valued at approximately ARS23 billion.

The redevelopment covers around 31,500 square metres.

The scale of the investment makes it one of the most significant recent public interventions along Mar del Plata’s waterfront.

First Stage of Works

The initial phase focuses on public-space and coastal infrastructure.

Works include:

  • New lighting.
  • Pavement repairs.
  • Improvements to stormwater drainage.

These interventions prepare the area for subsequent restoration work.

Restoration of the Arcades

The second stage, already tendered, focuses on restoring the arcades of the Central Casino and Provincial Hotel.

These areas form part of the architectural identity of the complex designed by Alejandro Bustillo.

The programme combines heritage preservation with functional improvement.

Architectural Importance

The complex is one of Mar del Plata’s most recognisable urban landmarks.

Bustillo’s design helped define the city’s twentieth-century identity around tourism, leisure and public life on the seafront.

That makes heritage conservation a central consideration in the redevelopment.

Better Co-ordination Between Agencies

One longstanding challenge has been the number of public bodies responsible for different parts of the site.

The Coordination Unit is intended to reduce that fragmentation.

It will provide a common framework for priorities, schedules and decision-making.

Tourism Impact

Bahía Bristol is one of Mar del Plata’s busiest visitor areas.

Redevelopment could strengthen links between:

  • Gaming.
  • Hotels.
  • Restaurants.
  • The waterfront.
  • Cultural activity.
  • Entertainment.

Gaming Within a Wider Development Strategy

IPLyC’s participation indicates that the Central Casino will be considered as part of a broader urban and tourism strategy.

That can encourage closer planning between gaming operations, surrounding services and public areas.

Industry Context

Buenos Aires Province is going through a broader period of reorganisation across its land-based gaming assets.

During 2026 it has advanced casino tenders, new operating agreements and modernisation initiatives.

Within that landscape, the Central Casino remains unique because of its scale, location and historic significance.

Next Steps and Impact

The Bahía Bristol Coordination Unit will now oversee the interaction between the seven participating public bodies and support execution of the redevelopment programme.

Immediate attention will centre on restoration of the arcades and continued infrastructure improvements.

For the Central Casino, the new structure could provide a more integrated management model linked to the wider tourism and heritage environment.

For Mar del Plata, the initiative represents an effort to restore one of the city’s defining landmarks while strengthening Bahía Bristol as a centre for tourism, entertainment and economic activity.
