GamblePause Launches App to Address Gambling Harm Across Africa
Nigeria.- 20 August 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com GamblePause has launched a new application designed to strengthen player protection and reduce gambling-related harm across Africa.
The Nigeria-based non-profit developed the tool specifically around the regulatory, cultural and technological realities of African markets.
The app combines self-exclusion, parental controls, gambling-platform blocking and access to localised psychological support.
Protection Designed for African Markets
GamblePause aims to provide a home-grown solution for a continent where responsible gambling and consumer-protection frameworks vary significantly between jurisdictions.
The application operates in more than 40 languages and is designed to tailor its protection tools to local audiences.
Its objective is to provide an additional layer of protection even in markets where regulatory safeguards remain limited.
Blocking Licensed and Illegal Platforms
One of the app’s central features is its blocking system.
Players can restrict access to gambling platforms, while parents can activate similar controls on devices used by their children.
The system is intended to cover both licensed and unlicensed gambling websites.
Illegal operators present a particular technical challenge because they can rapidly switch domains after a website is blocked.
GamblePause has therefore built backend infrastructure allowing identified URLs to be updated continuously.
Self-Exclusion Tools
Players can also use the application as a self-exclusion mechanism.
The objective is to prevent users who have chosen to stop gambling from simply moving from a licensed operator to an unregulated alternative.
The blocking system is therefore designed to extend beyond conventional self-exclusion schemes that cover authorised operators only.
Parental Controls
The application also includes dedicated tools for parents and guardians.
These controls can restrict access to gambling platforms directly from a child’s device.
Protecting minors is a key part of the project, particularly given concerns raised by GamblePause over the quality of age-verification systems in parts of the continent.
Concerns Over Verification
GamblePause founder Ladipo Abiose said some African markets continue to face significant shortcomings in Know Your Customer and age-verification procedures.
In some cases, he said, users can open accounts simply by ticking a box confirming that they are over 18.
Abiose believes the industry needs technology-driven identity-verification systems capable of preventing underage users from accessing gambling before they can place bets.
Localised Psychological Support
Another key component of GamblePause is access to therapeutic support.
The application can connect users experiencing gambling-related harm with professionals who speak their language.
The service is intended to reduce cultural and linguistic barriers that may prevent people in different parts of Africa from accessing specialised support.
Continental Expansion
GamblePause has already been registered in Zambia, where it is working with GamAid Zambia.
The organisation is also collaborating with Namdef in Namibia and pursuing registrations in:
- Tanzania.
- Cameroon.
- Malawi.
Its longer-term ambition is to connect these initiatives through an African Responsible Gaming Network.
Working with Regulators
The organisation also intends to use the app as a tool to deepen engagement with regulatory authorities.
GamblePause believes presenting ready-to-use technological solutions can strengthen institutional dialogue and demonstrate how more effective player-protection systems could operate.
The organisation has already begun discussions with authorities including South Africa’s Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board.
Advertising and Prediction Markets
The protection system is also intended to address gambling advertising.
GamblePause is additionally monitoring the growth of prediction markets, a segment it expects could become increasingly significant across Africa over the coming years.
The organisation intends to adapt its tools as new digital betting formats emerge.
Next Steps or Impact
The GamblePause launch introduces an African-built technological solution focused on challenges specific to the region.
Its combination of self-exclusion, licensed and illegal-site blocking, parental controls and psychological support expands the range of tools traditionally associated with Responsible Gambling.
The project’s next phase will focus on deeper cooperation with regulators and local organisations as GamblePause works towards creating a continent-wide player-protection network.
