Esports Nations Cup Postponed Until November 2027

Saudi Arabia.- 20 August 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com The Esports Foundation has confirmed that the inaugural Esports Nations Cup (ENC) has been postponed from its original November 2026 date in Riyadh.

The competition will now take place in November 2027, although an exact date within the month has not yet been announced.

Regional Uncertainty Drives Decision

The organisation said the postponement follows an ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation and consultations with key stakeholders.

The decision comes after the 2026 Esports World Cup was also moved from Riyadh to Paris for reasons linked to regional conditions.

The Esports Foundation nevertheless stressed that Saudi Arabia remains capable of hosting major sporting and entertainment events.

National-Team Competition

The Esports Nations Cup has been designed as a biennial competition in which participants represent their countries rather than professional clubs.

The format is intended to distinguish the ENC from the annual Esports World Cup, which is primarily built around club-based competition.

The Nations Cup was first unveiled at the New Global Sport Conference in Riyadh in August 2025.

More Than 100 Countries and Territories Involved

Since the project was announced, more than 100 countries and territories across every continent have secured official National Team Partner status.

The organisation confirmed that all existing commitments made through the ENC Development Fund will remain in place despite the postponement.

National esports development programmes will also continue throughout the extended preparation period.

Confirmed Publishers

Several major game publishers have already committed to the inaugural competition.

Partners include:

  • Electronic Arts.
  • Krafton.
  • Tencent.
  • Ubisoft.
  • Chess.com.
  • MOONTON Games.
  • SNK.

The line-up covers both team-based and individual competitive formats.

Calendar and Qualification Structure Still Pending

The Esports Foundation has not yet confirmed the exact date of the event within November 2027.

A revised qualification structure has also not been published.

The organisation will work directly with partners over the coming weeks to assess the impact of the new timeline and provide clarity on qualification pathways and the updated competition calendar.

Statements

Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports Foundation, said the decision to postpone the Esports Nations Cup was not taken lightly and highlighted the strong response from national-team partners, publishers, players and communities.

He said the organisation remains committed to delivering an inaugural competition under the right conditions and at the level expected of the project.

Reichert also confirmed that development work will continue and that the ambition behind the ENC remains unchanged.

Industry Context

The creation of an international national-team esports competition represents a significant institutional development for the sector.

The model aims to introduce a structure comparable to major international events in traditional sport while complementing an esports ecosystem largely built around professional clubs and private organisations.

The additional year provides more time to develop national-team structures, selection programmes and coordination between publishers, partners and organisers.

Next Steps or Impact

The Esports Foundation must now establish the revised event calendar and qualification process for November 2027.

National-team development programmes will continue in the meantime, alongside existing funding commitments to National Team Partners.

The postponement delays the competition’s debut but leaves intact its goal of establishing a major international esports platform centred on national representation.
