Betting Brands Dominate Libertadores and Sudamericana Sponsorships

Brazil.- 20 August 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Betting companies have consolidated their position as one of the leading commercial forces in South American football.

Of the 32 clubs competing in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana round of 16, 25 have commercial agreements with betting companies, representing 78% of all remaining teams.

Many operators also occupy the most valuable commercial position on club shirts as principal sponsors.

Stronger Presence in Copa Libertadores

Betting-sector penetration is particularly high in the Copa Libertadores.

Of the 16 teams that reached the round of 16, only two do not display betting brands on their shirts.

In addition, eight clubs have a betting platform as their principal shirt sponsor.

This makes betting one of the most visible commercial categories within South America’s leading club competition.

Ten Clubs Sponsored in Sudamericana

A similar pattern can be seen in the Copa Sudamericana.

Of the 16 remaining clubs, 10 have sponsorship agreements with betting companies.

Five of those teams feature the brands in the principal position on their shirts.

The combined presence across both tournaments highlights the sector’s growing importance within the commercial structures of South American football clubs.

Brazil Leads the Trend

Brazilian teams show an even higher concentration of betting sponsorships.

Brazil has six clubs in the Libertadores round of 16, with five featuring a betting company as principal sponsor.

Mirassol is the only exception.

The pattern is almost identical in the Copa Sudamericana, where five of Brazil’s six remaining clubs have betting brands in the main sponsorship position.

Red Bull Bragantino is the only Brazilian team in that competition without a betting operator as principal shirt sponsor.

More Than R$1 Billion Per Year

Betting sponsorship agreements involving Brazilian clubs are now estimated to be worth more than R$1 billion annually.

The development of the regulated market has increased operators’ ability to invest in highly visible sports assets, making football clubs one of the sector’s primary marketing channels.

All betting brands appearing on the shirts of Brazilian clubs in the Libertadores currently operate under Federal Government regulations.

Brazil and Argentina Show Significant Gap

Sponsorship values also reveal a significant difference between major South American markets.

River Plate signed a principal betting sponsorship in 2025 estimated at USD 6 million per year, equivalent at the time to approximately R$36 million.

Boca Juniors receives around R$35 million annually, while Racing earns approximately R$12 million per year through its principal betting sponsorship.

In Brazil, meanwhile, Corinthians, Flamengo, Palmeiras and São Paulo each receive more than R$100 million annually from betting-company sponsorships.

Betting Becomes a Financial Pillar

Leonardo Henrique Roscoe Bessa, a Betlaw partner and consultant to the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association, highlighted betting’s growing importance to South American football finances.

He noted that the prominence of betting brands in football’s most valuable sponsorship positions reflects the financial strength the sector has achieved.

He also stressed that expansion needs to be supported by clear rules and legal certainty for clubs, operators and consumers.

Impact on Competitiveness

Moises Assayag, Managing Partner at Channel Associados and a football-finance specialist, linked the growth of betting sponsorships to the increased financial capacity of Brazilian clubs.

He argued that higher commercial revenues have supported larger wage budgets and transfer spending, widening the economic gap between Brazilian teams and many of their South American competitors.

Responsible Gambling Enters the Agenda

The increased exposure of betting brands also creates greater responsibility for operators and clubs.

Daniel Fortune, a content creator focused on betting awareness, highlighted that sector growth should be accompanied by information, limits and guidance for consumers.

With betting brands increasingly embedded in football, Responsible Gambling is becoming a more important component of commercial and communication strategies.

Next Steps or Impact

The presence of betting companies across 78% of the clubs competing in the Libertadores and Sudamericana round of 16 confirms the sector’s position as one of South American football’s main sponsorship sources.

Brazil stands out as the market where this relationship has reached its greatest financial scale, with contracts significantly exceeding those recorded elsewhere in the region.

The challenge for clubs and operators will be maintaining this investment within a regulated, sustainable environment supported by Responsible Gambling policies.
