ANJL Highlights Fall in Betting’s Reported Financial Impact

Brazil.- 17 July 2026 www.zonadeazar.com  Brazil’s National Association of Games and Lotteries believes a Datafolha survey indicates that betting is not the leading cause of household indebtedness in the country.

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) assessed the findings of a nationwide Datafolha survey examining Brazilians’ relationship with betting platforms.

According to the study, 7% of respondents said they placed bets, unchanged from the level recorded in November 2024, before Brazil’s regulated market became operational.

Financial indicators decline

Among respondents who said they bet, the proportion reporting that betting had affected their finances fell from 44% to 35%.

The percentage who said they had failed to pay a bill in order to bet decreased from 13% to 6%, while the proportion who had forgone a purchase to use the money for betting fell from 19% to 11%.

Those who reported borrowing money to bet also declined from 15% to 8%.

Lower online casino spending

Average reported spending on online casinos fell by 34%, from R$354 in 2024 to R$232 in the latest survey.

Only 4% of all respondents said they regularly accessed online casinos.

The nationwide study questioned approximately 2,000 people across 139 municipalities, including metropolitan areas and inland cities.

ANJL’s assessment

ANJL President Plínio Lemos Jorge said the findings demonstrate the importance of the rules introduced by regulation, safeguards intended to discourage compulsive behaviour and increased enforcement against illegal operators.

The association believes the stable number of bettors and the decline in several financial indicators suggest that most users regard betting as a form of entertainment.

ANJL also said the data could contribute to a more evidence-based public debate about the economic and social effects of betting.
