Google Still Blocking Betting Apps on the Platform

U.K.- April 22 2025 www.zonadeazar.com Google reiterated its policy of banning betting apps from the Play Store, allowing only apps from Caixa Econômica Federal lotteries and horse racing. This decision goes against the interests of licensed sports betting companies in Brazil seeking more visibility on digital platforms.
Industry representatives have discussed Google’s decision with the Ministry of Finance, and the Brazilian Association of Bets and Fantasy Sports (ABFS) formally requested support to reverse this policy. The association argues that allowing apps in official stores would create a clear distinction between legal and illegal services, increasing user trust and potentially boosting sector revenue, according to Estadão.
Will Social Media Follow the Same Path?
As mentioned, APP fraud has become one of the fastest-growing fraud types in both the U.S. and UK, with many scammers placing ads for fraudulent products or services on social media.
A recent report by Revolut revealed that social media platforms have become fraudsters’ favorite environment for posting misleading ads. According to the document, 54% of all fraud cases reported to the UK digital bank came from Meta-owned platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
This situation has raised ongoing concerns at financial institutions like Revolut, which have urged UK regulators to hold social networks accountable for fraudulent activity on their platforms.
These demands were made by financial service providers in October of last year, when the Payment Systems Regulator introduced new APP fraud rules, mandating that losses be split evenly between payer and receiver, with a limit of £85,000.
Although social media platforms are not yet subject to the UK’s APP fraud rules, Google’s 2024 Ads Safety Report demonstrates the benefits that AI can offer in preventing fraudulent ads before they ever reach the public.
