Laos Investigates Possible Match-Fixing in the 2026 ASEAN Cup

Laos.- 15th August 2026 www.zonadeazar.com The Lao Football Federation (LFF) has requested that authorities investigate possible cases of bribery, match-fixing, and illegal betting involving members of the national team during its participation in the 2026 ASEAN Cup.

The integrity of Southeast Asian soccer came under scrutiny after the Lao Football Federation formally referred the case to the country’s Ministry of Public Security.

According to reports released on August 14, the LFF had previously conducted an internal investigation and interviewed several members of the national team on August 2 and 6. After analyzing the information and evidence gathered, the Federation determined that there was sufficient evidence to request an investigation by the authorities.

The formal request was sent on August 7 and addresses the possible existence of bribes, match-fixing, and participation in illegal betting activities during the four matches played by Laos in Group B of the 2026 ASEAN Cup.

Four losses and several incidents under scrutiny

Laos’s performance on the field was particularly poor. The team lost all four of its matches: It thus finished the group stage with 3 goals scored and 20 conceded.

  • Laos 1–4 Philippines

  • Laos 2–7 Myanmar

In addition to the results, various incidents that occurred during the matches drew attention. Among them were two own goals, while the team accumulated three red cards and twelve yellow cards over the course of its four matches.

One of the most notable cases involved defender Phetdavanh Somsanith, who was sent off against Thailand, served a one-match suspension against Malaysia, and received another red card in his next appearance, against the Philippines.

The investigation is just beginning

The Federation has not publicly identified any players under suspicion nor determined that match-fixing actually took place.

The goal of the police investigation will be to establish whether the detected irregularities may be related to violations of Laos’ sports and criminal laws and to determine whether there was involvement in illegal betting or any form of match-fixing.

Therefore, from the perspective of sports integrity, it is essential to distinguish between the evidence that prompted the investigation and any eventual confirmation of match-fixing.

The case once again highlights the importance of monitoring, investigation, and cooperation mechanisms between sports federations and public authorities in addressing potential irregularities related to betting.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing, and no players have been formally charged, nor is there a conclusion confirming that the matches were fixed.
