Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Deolane Bezerra Does Not Testify at the CPI on Game Manipulation

Brazil.- October 30, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com Influencer Deolane Bezerra and businessman Darwin Filho did not attend Tuesday’s (29) meeting of the CPI on Game and Sports Betting Manipulation. They obtained habeas corpus from the Supreme Federal Court (STF), allowing them to avoid testifying before the committee.

The president of the parliamentary inquiry committee, Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), expressed disappointment over their absences and stated that he disagreed with STF Minister André Mendonça’s decision, which made their attendance at the CPI optional. In Kajuru’s view, Deolane and Darwin are “deeply involved” in irregularities related to betting.

Senator Kajuru described André Mendonça’s decision as “political interference by a Judiciary representative in the Legislative Power.”

“If decisions like those made by Minister André Mendonça are widely adopted, they will inevitably empty parliamentary inquiry committees, meaning there would be no need for CPI anymore! (…) Essentially, it’s a form of cancellation of a critical instrument for the Legislative’s oversight role, one of its main duties. (…) This sets a very serious precedent from now on. What is the point of having a CPI if the Supreme Federal Court continues to act this way?” declared Kajuru.

Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) also voiced his frustration. He argued that the STF is violating parliamentary prerogatives and preventing the Senate from fulfilling one of its roles.

The request (REQ 111/2024) to summon Deolane was made by the vice-president of the parliamentary inquiry committee, Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).

Recently, Deolane was arrested in a Civil Police operation in Pernambuco targeting a criminal organization involved in illegal betting and money laundering.

The executive director of the betting company Esportes da Sorte, Darwin Henrique da Silva Filho, was summoned under a request (REQ 113/2024) by Kajuru.

According to the request, there is consistent evidence of the company’s involvement in illegal activities, as indicated by the Operation Integration investigation, which also led to Deolane Bezerra’s arrest.
