Revenue and Wagering Growth

Players placed approximately CA$1.28 billion in wagers during September, while winnings totalled CA$1.22 billion.

The difference resulted in CA$56.6 million in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue, generated across 24 active operators.

Monthly performance shows consistent growth:

  • July: CA$22.2 million, with 16 operators.
  • August: CA$43.3 million, with 20 operators.
  • September: CA$56.6 million, with 24 operators.

Total wagers increased by 20% between August and September, while revenue expanded at a faster rate.

  • Online casino: CA$42.8 million, up 19.9%.
  • Sports and event betting: CA$11.1 million, more than double August’s figure.
  • Live casino: CA$2.8 million, compared with CA$2.4 million in August.

Sports betting recorded the strongest relative growth, supported by increased wagering activity and improved operator margins.

Sports Betting Revenue More Than Doubles

Revenue climbed from CA$5.2 million in August to CA$11.1 million in September.

Active Player Accounts Approach 390,000

The number of active player accounts reached 388,585 in September, up 23.7% from 314,091 in August.

Average revenue per active account increased from CA$138 to CA$146.

AiGC clarified that these figures represent active accounts rather than unique individuals, as players may hold accounts with multiple operators.

International Operators Expand Their Presence

Alberta’s regulated market has attracted considerable interest from major international iGaming groups.

Companies operating or establishing a presence in the province include:

  • bet365, through its sportsbook and casino platforms.
  • Flutter Entertainment, through FanDuel Sportsbook and FanDuel Casino.
  • Entain, through brands including BetMGM.
  • BetVictor, offering sportsbook and casino products.
  • Super Group, through Betway and other brands.
  • evoke, with 888 entering the market in October.
  • SkillOnNet, with brands including PlayOJO and SpinGenie.

The expanding operator landscape highlights Alberta’s commercial appeal while signalling increasingly competitive market conditions.

Technology Suppliers and Licensing Activity

International technology and gaming suppliers are also strengthening their presence in Alberta.

Companies including Greentube, Pragmatic Play, 1X2 Network, Altenar, Play’n GO, EveryMatrix and Games Global have entered the market or secured relevant regulatory approvals.

Their participation supports the development of gaming platforms, casino content and sports betting technology.

Market Entry Costs and Revenue Distribution

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) charges an initial CA$50,000 application fee and an annual CA$150,000 registration fee per gaming site.

The province’s revenue-sharing framework includes an initial allocation of 3% of gross gaming revenue:

  • 2% allocated to First Nations communities.
  • 1% allocated to social responsibility programmes.

Operators subsequently retain 80% of the remaining net gaming revenue, while the provincial government receives 20%, subject to the final terms of regulatory agreements.

Statements From Alberta iGaming Corporation

Dan Keene, Chief Executive Officer of AiGC, welcomed the early performance of the newly regulated market.

“Early results indicate that Albertans value the strong oversight and greater accountability offered by a regulated market,” he stated.

The regulator considers the framework an important step towards stronger consumer protection and greater transparency in online gambling.

Outlook for the Remainder of 2026

Early performance indicators suggest that Alberta’s regulated iGaming market continues to expand in revenue, player engagement and operator participation.

AiGC expects additional operators to enter before the end of 2026, while October’s figures, scheduled for release in the third week of November, should provide further insight into the performance of recently launched brands.

September’s 30.7% revenue growth positions Alberta as an emerging opportunity for international gaming operators and suppliers, although regulatory costs and increasing competition will remain important considerations for future expansion.
