Lotería de Medellín Renews Its Environmental Sustainability Certification
Colombia.- 29 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Lotería de Medellín has renewed its certification in Corporate Sustainability, Carbon Footprint Measurement and Verification, and Carbon Credits, awarded by Corporación Fenalco Solidario Colombia.
The recognition highlights the organisation’s progress in environmental responsibility, circular economy initiatives and efficient resource management.
Its principal achievements include the offsetting of 78 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂), the use of 77 MWh of renewable electricity backed by certificates, and the recovery of more than 84 tonnes of recyclable materials.
Fenalco Solidario Renews Certification
The renewed certification recognises the sustainability practices implemented by Lotería de Medellín.
The assessment covers responsible business management, carbon emissions measurement and environmental offsetting mechanisms.
For the organisation, the recognition demonstrates the continuity of its efforts to incorporate environmental and social considerations into its operations.
The certification also supports the monitoring of sustainability results and the improvement of internal assessment procedures.
Offsetting 78 Tonnes of CO₂
One of the main environmental achievements reported by the organisation is the offsetting of 78 tonnes of CO₂.
This initiative was carried out through the CARBONO SANTA INÉS forestry project, which is associated with carbon offsetting activities.
Participation in the project forms part of Lotería de Medellín’s environmental management strategy.
Carbon offsetting complements measures aimed at reducing emissions and improving resource efficiency.
Use of 77 MWh of Renewable Energy
Lotería de Medellín also reported the use of 77 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable energy, supported by I-REC certificates.
The certification system provides documentation of the renewable attributes of electricity generation.
These certificates support the organisation’s energy and environmental management strategy.
The initiative represents progress in incorporating traceability mechanisms and responsible energy management practices.
More Than 84 Tonnes of Recyclable Materials Recovered
During 2025, the organisation managed the recovery of 84,818 kilograms of recyclable materials.
These materials primarily consisted of paperwork used in prize payment and return processes.
The recovered materials were allocated to the Lotería de Medellín Employees’ Fund, connecting resource recovery with a social initiative.
The total represents more than 84 tonnes and stands among the organisation’s principal circular economy achievements.
Collaboration With Social Organisations
Alongside its recycling activities, Lotería de Medellín participated in community initiatives involving the recovery of plastic waste.
Its contributions included:
- 144.6 kilograms of plastic bottles, donated to the Botellas de Amor foundation.
- 44 kilograms of plastic bottle caps, provided to the Tapitas por la Vida campaign.
These initiatives aim to provide recovered materials with alternative uses while supporting social causes.
The organisation regards the connection between recycling and community support as an important element of its sustainability policy.
Carbon Footprint Measurement and Verification
Another key component of the recognition is the measurement and verification of the organisation’s 2025 carbon footprint.
This process enables Lotería de Medellín to identify and assess emissions associated with its operations.
Access to verified environmental information supports performance monitoring and the development of additional management measures.
The organisation intends to use these indicators to improve its practices and continue implementing emissions reduction and offsetting initiatives.
Statements From Lotería de Medellín
Néstor Fernando Zuluaga Giraldo, General Manager of Lotería de Medellín, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to sustainability and regional development.
“At Lotería de Medellín, we will continue promoting initiatives that enable us to improve our practices, use resources responsibly and contribute to a more sustainable future for Antioquia,” he stated.
The executive emphasised the importance of integrating climate action, circular economy principles and solidarity into institutional management.
These priorities form part of the organisation’s strategy to strengthen its environmental and social responsibility.
Employee Participation in Sustainability Initiatives
The organisation also encourages sustainable practices among its employees.
These measures include reusing materials, recycling and reducing waste.
Staff are also encouraged to conserve water and electricity by switching off unnecessary lights and disconnecting equipment when it is not in use.
Protecting natural environments is another aspect of the organisation’s internal recommendations.
These activities aim to make environmental responsibility part of everyday working practices.
Institutional Certification Track Record
The renewed environmental recognition adds to other certifications achieved by Lotería de Medellín.
Earlier in 2026, the organisation became the first lottery operator in Colombia to obtain certification under the NTC 6767:2024 technical standard.
The standard evaluates aspects relating to security, quality and transparency in the preparation and execution of territorial lottery draws.
Although the two certifications cover different areas of institutional management, they demonstrate the organisation’s efforts to strengthen its procedures and assessment mechanisms.
Industry Impact and Next Steps
The renewal of Fenalco Solidario Colombia’s certification reinforces Lotería de Medellín’s environmental and social achievements.
The results reflect a strategy combining emissions offsetting, renewable electricity certification, recycling and collaboration with community initiatives.
The organisation will continue developing environmental monitoring mechanisms and promoting efficient resource management.
With 78 tonnes of CO₂ offset, 77 MWh of renewable electricity backed by certificates and 84,818 kilograms of recyclable materials recovered, Lotería de Medellín reaffirms its commitment to sustainable and responsible management in Antioquia.
