Brazil Expands List of Sports Allowed for Fixed-Odds Betting

Brazil.– April 24, 2025 – www.zonadeazar.com A new ordinance from the Ministry of Sports was published this Wednesday (23) in the Federal Official Gazette, expanding the list of sports disciplines authorized for fixed-odds betting on real events.
The measure, outlined in Ordinance MESP No. 36, dated April 17, 2025, amends and updates the rules previously defined by Ordinance No. 125 from December 2024.
The main novelty is the inclusion of new sports disciplines that can now be the subject of betting in the country.
The newly added sports include:
- Auto racing
- Beach tennis
- Capoeira
- Bodybuilding
- Society football (including the popular “X1” format – a one-on-one match between two players)
- Jiu-jitsu
- MMA (mixed martial arts)
- Rally
- Sumo
- Chess
These disciplines add to an already extensive list of permitted sports such as traditional football, volleyball, basketball, among others.
Another important aspect of the new ordinance is the strengthened regulation of eSports (electronic sports). Betting on these tournaments is now officially authorized, provided that organizers hold licenses from the game developers or rights holders.
Moreover, the regulation prohibits any form of exclusivity. This means that no game developer or betting operator can demand that tournaments be operated solely by one company. The goal is to ensure equal conditions for all market participants and promote free competition.
To bring more transparency and safety to the sector, the Ministry of Sports has committed to maintaining a public and regularly updated list of all sports disciplines authorized for betting. This list may grow over time as new sports practices are regulated or recognized by official entities.
The expansion of the betting sports list is part of the ongoing regulation of Brazil’s sports betting market, initiated with Law No. 14.790, enacted in December 2023. The objective is to provide more clarity, legal certainty, and business opportunities in a sector that moves billions of reais annually.
For regular bettors, this means more entertainment options and market variety, with the assurance that betting activities are supervised and follow clear rules. For the sports sector, it may lead to more investments, visibility, and appreciation for less traditional disciplines.
