Zona de Azar Brasil – Brazil: Sports Betting CPI Hears on Tuesday From Former Advisor to the Ministry of Finance

Brazil.- June 28, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting will hear on Tuesday (2), at 2:30 pm, the former special advisor to the Ministry of Finance José Francisco Manssur. The request was presented by senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE).

In the request (REQ 28/2024 – CPIMJAE), the senator reports that, according to a publication in Veja magazine in September 2023, Manssur alerted the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, about a request for R$35 million made by a federal deputy to an association of betting companies. The money would be used to defend the sector’s interests in regulation and avoid reprisals in the Sports Betting CPI of the Chamber of Deputies.

The magazine’s complaint points out that deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), CPI rapporteur, had requested the amount to offer protection and support to the sector. Manssur would have been approached by the president of the National Gaming and Lottery Association, Wesley Cardia, who reported having been approached by the deputy and other members of the CPI in search of financial advantages.

Girão states that Manssur’s summons by the CPI aims to clarify issues related to allegations of match-fixing in Brazilian football, involving players, managers and betting companies.“For these reasons, it is considered that the testimony of Mr. José Francisco Manssur, former special advisor to the Ministry of Finance, will allow the elucidation of several aspects related to the object of the commission’s investigation”, explains the senator.
