The online gambling market alone is expected to generate USD 97.70 billion by the end of 2024, with an annual growth rate of 6.46%, bringing the market volume to USD 133.60 billion by 2029.

Minimum Deposit Casinos (MDC), a division of the OneTwenty group, investigated how governments are utilizing the tax revenue from gambling and the impact of this taxation on public finances.

Top Countries in Online Gambling Revenue in 2024

United States: In 2023, USD 14.4 billion was paid to the government in direct gambling taxes. USD 750 million was allocated to conservation projects. The tax was also applied to highland management, invasive species removal, flood and sea level rise resilience, and water resource maintenance.

United Kingdom: The betting/gambling tax amounted to £3.4 billion in 2023 and 2024. A portion of these funds finances the National Health Service and improves healthcare facilities. Another part of this tax is used for community projects, road infrastructure, public transportation, and housing.

Australia: In 2020, gambling operators paid AUS 5.8 billion in taxes to the government. Much of this funded public hospitals, medical services, and mental health programs. The tax also financed public schools, universities, and training programs. Infrastructure projects such as roads, public transportation, and public housing also benefited.

Germany: €5.2 billion was collected in gambling taxes in 2022. Much of this funded public hospitals, medical research, and mental health services. A portion was allocated to unemployment insurance, housing assistance, and support for low-income families. The money was also applied to infrastructure, arts/culture programs, and education.

Canada: Canada collects about CAD 9 billion annually in gambling taxes. Much of this amount is allocated to healthcare, social programs, public safety initiatives, environmental protection, infrastructure, and more.
