Zona de Azar Brazil – Brazil: This Week the Bets CPI Hears from a Businesswoman and a Former Tax Collector

Brazil.- 18th March 2025 www.zonadeazar.com After resuming its activities on March 11 with the testimony of the special secretary of the Federal Revenue Service, Robinson Barreirinhas, the Bets CPI hears from two more witnesses this week.
Adélia de Jesus Soares, a lawyer and owner of Payflow Processadora de Pagamentos Ltda, has been summoned for today at 11am.
The call came at the request of the committee’s rapporteur, Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS). The parliamentarian argues that the lawyer and businesswoman must provide clarification about her indictment by the Federal District Civil Police for the crimes of ideological falsehood and criminal association.
“The investigations indicate that the lawyer collaborated with a foreign organization to structure and illegally operate games of chance in the national territory, using the company Playflow as a front. According to the investigation, Playflow would have been used for irregular financial transactions, with signs of money laundering and transactions carried out in disagreement with Central Bank regulations, through the use of unreliable documents and fraudulent mechanisms”, justifies the senator.
According to Soraya, the company is said to be linked to another company based in the British Virgin Islands, which shows the possible internationalization of the illicit practices under investigation.
Ludopathy
On Thursday (20), at 11am, businessman and former bookmaker André Holanda Rodrigues Rolim has been invited to speak. According to the request presented by the CPI’s president, Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR), Rolim is a recovering gambler. He is expected to give his testimony as a former gambler and will talk about the risks that gambling can bring to people’s mental and financial health.
“Ludopathy, or pathological gambling, represents a growing danger in the context of sports betting, especially with the ease of access to online platforms. This condition, recognized as a mental disorder, can lead to devastating consequences for the lives of individuals and their families,” says Dr. Hiran.
For the senator, the lack of effective consumer protection mechanisms – including the implementation of betting limits, the promotion of awareness campaigns about the risks of gambling and the provision of support and treatment for individuals addicted to gambling – means that online gambling addiction is on the rise.
