Stake Secures Alberta Approval Ahead of Canadian Market Debut
Canada.- 8 October 2026 | www.zonadeazar.com Stake is preparing to enter Canada’s regulated gaming market for the first time after securing licence approval from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, AGLC.
The company expects to go live in Alberta on 12 October 2026, subject to signing an operating agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation, AiGC.
First Regulated Entry Into Canada
The launch will mark Stake’s first entry into a regulated Canadian market.
The operator already has authorised operations across several European and Latin American jurisdictions and is now adding Alberta to its international expansion strategy.
AGLC Approval
Stake has secured the required regulatory approval from AGLC.
The regulator is responsible for overseeing operators and enforcing Alberta’s technical, compliance and player-protection requirements.
AiGC Agreement Still Required
The licence approval does not mean Stake can immediately begin taking bets.
Before launch, the operator must finalise an operating agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation.
AiGC manages the commercial side of the province’s competitive iGaming market.
Launch Targeted for 12 October
If the remaining requirement is completed, Stake Canada expects to become operational on 12 October.
The company will enter Alberta’s regulated online casino and sports betting ecosystem.
Market Open Since July
Alberta officially launched its competitive iGaming market on 13 July 2026.
Prior to that, Play Alberta operated as the province’s primary authorised online gaming platform.
The new framework opened the market to private operators subject to local regulation.
Regulatory Structure
Alberta divides responsibilities between two bodies.
AGLC serves as the regulator, while AiGC oversees market operations and maintains commercial agreements with licensed operators.
Revenue Model
Under Alberta’s framework, operators can retain approximately 80% of net iGaming revenue, while the province retains 20%.
Separate allocations are made beforehand for First Nations initiatives and social responsibility funding.
Player Protection
The regulated market includes requirements covering:
- Responsible gambling.
- Advertising.
- Protection of minors.
- Vulnerable-player safeguards.
- Centralised self-exclusion.
- Compliance and operating controls.
The Government aims to move activity previously taking place with unregulated operators into the licensed market.
Statements
Stake Canada Country Manager Kris Abbott described the Alberta entry as a significant milestone for the brand.
He said the company intends to bring the distinctive entertainment and product approach associated with Stake to the province.
Stake Canada board member Birgitte Sand said regulated market entry is based on preparation, accountability and a long-term commitment to compliance and player safety.
International Expansion
Stake continues to increase its presence in locally regulated markets.
The brand already operates in jurisdictions including Italy and Denmark in Europe, along with Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina in Latin America.
Alberta now becomes another strategic market in North America.
Next Steps or Impact
The immediate next step is completing the operating agreement with AiGC.
If the process is finalised as expected, Stake will launch in Alberta on 12 October 2026.
Its arrival adds another major international brand to Alberta’s young regulated market and increases competition across the province’s iGaming and sports betting sector.
