Zona de Azar Brasil – Brasil: Fluminense Participates in the STF Betting Hearing
Brazil.- November 7, 2024 www.zonadeazar.com This week, Fluminense requested to join the Supreme Federal Court (STF) as amicus curiae, or friend of the court, in the unconstitutionality action against Law No. 14,790/2023, also known as the Sports Betting Law, filed by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services, and Tourism (CNC).
The club has expressed support for the regulation of the online gaming and betting law, noting that its revocation could significantly impact the finances of the Rio-based club and other Brazilian clubs.
“The impact of these funds on the development of professional football in the country is undeniable. Currently, 75% of the clubs in the Série A of the Brazilian Championship have sports betting companies as their main sponsors. It is estimated that in 2024, revenue from betting contracts will represent nearly 15% of the total revenue for clubs in the two main divisions of the national competition,” reads a portion of Fluminense’s request, as reported by the newspaper O Globo.
Next Monday, the 11th, the court will hold a hearing presided over by STF Minister Luiz Fux to discuss the impact of sports betting and online gaming in Brazil. Participants will include football clubs, associations, betting operators, and health professionals. The Rio club is expected to provide information and make oral arguments during the proceedings.
The general public can watch the broadcast on TV Justiça, listen on Rádio Justiça, or follow it on the court’s YouTube channel.
Minister Fux emphasized that he does not expect the hearing to be monotonous, adding, “It is also expected that the presenters will provide objective, concise, consistent arguments supported by real-world data and scientific evidence gathered through rigorous methodology, avoiding merely generic, abstract statements or repeating the arguments already made by the parties involved.”
