Argentina Presents Bill To Prevent Gambling Addiction

Argentina.– 27 May 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com  The national government presents to Congress the Bill for the Prevention of Gambling Addiction and Regulation of Online Gambling, aimed at organising the virtual betting market, limiting advertising and strengthening the protection of children and adolescents.

Overview
The initiative proposes treating pathological gambling as a national health policy. The Ministry of Health, through SEDRONAR, will play a central role in prevention, assistance and coordination of strategies with the country’s 24 jurisdictions.

Details / Context
The bill provides for prevention and awareness programmes for children, adolescents, families, educational institutions and social organisations. It also includes training for state agents and technical teams, production of epidemiological information and communication campaigns on the risks of compulsive gambling.

In addition, it proposes coordination between the BCRA, CNV, ENACOM and NIC Argentina to block technical and economic resources used by illegal platforms. Financial institutions, payment service providers and virtual asset service providers will not be allowed to operate with unauthorised gambling sites.

Impact
The proposal bans the promotion, sponsorship and dissemination of illegal platforms on television, radio, public spaces, social media and digital environments. Media outlets, agencies, entities and content creators must verify that promoted operators hold official authorisation.

Regarding minors, the bill establishes that authorised platforms must have effective age verification systems. It also instructs the BCRA to prevent money transfers from accounts linked to minors to gambling operators.

Future Outlook
The initiative proposes amending the Criminal Code with prison sentences of three to six years for those who exploit or organise unauthorised betting systems. It also creates a new criminal offence to sanction those who provide essential financial, technological, advertising or digital services to illegal operators.
