Alberta to Launch iGaming Market with 32 Licensed Sites
Canada.- May 28, 2026 – www.zonadeazar.com The Canadian province of Alberta is preparing to officially launch its new regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026, with an initial total of 32 licensed domains and 11 authorised platform providers. The launch represents one of North America’s most significant online gaming regulatory developments since Ontario opened its competitive market in 2022.
The new framework will allow private operators to enter the market under the supervision of Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and the newly created Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC).
Details / Context
Until now, PlayAlberta operated as the province’s only legal online betting and casino platform. However, Alberta’s government decided to move towards a competitive model inspired by Ontario, aiming to attract private operators and reduce the influence of offshore gambling sites.
Official estimates suggest that approximately 70% of Alberta’s online gambling market currently takes place through unregulated or offshore platforms. The new framework seeks to channel that activity towards licensed operators complying with player protection and responsible gambling standards.
The regulations include centralised self-exclusion systems, financial and time limits, problem gambling monitoring and advertising restrictions aimed at protecting minors and vulnerable individuals. The rules also prohibit the use of active or retired athletes in gambling promotions.
Impact
Alberta’s market opening is generating strong interest among international sportsbook and online casino operators, particularly because the province combines high disposable income, a young adult population and elevated gambling expenditure levels.
Several companies have already started their registration processes with AGLC ahead of the official July launch. Brands expected to participate include global operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Betway.
The economic structure of the market will allow Alberta to retain 20% of net gaming revenue, while licensed operators will receive the remaining 80%. Part of the revenue allocation will also support social responsibility programmes and Indigenous communities.
Future Perspective
Alberta’s launch will be closely monitored by the global iGaming industry as it could become Canada’s next major regulated market after Ontario.
A successful rollout may accelerate similar regulatory discussions across other Canadian provinces that still maintain monopoly or semi-open systems. At the same time, Alberta aims to demonstrate that a competitive regulated market can reduce offshore gambling activity, strengthen consumer protection and increase public revenue generation.
