Denmark Warns Over Sports Streaming by Betting Operators

Denmark.- 14 July 2026 www.zonadeazar.com Denmark’s Spillemyndigheden has warned that betting operators could face tighter regulation if sports streaming becomes a significant part of their business. The regulator indicated that expanded streaming services may eventually be treated in the same way as traditional broadcasters for advertising purposes.

News Details

According to Spillemyndigheden Director Anders Dorph, sports streaming currently remains an ancillary feature offered by betting operators and is therefore not subject to the same advertising restrictions that apply to broadcasters.

However, Dorph explained that this assessment could change if operators substantially expand their sports rights portfolios or develop streaming services that compete directly with television and digital broadcasters. In such circumstances, additional regulatory obligations could be introduced.

The authority stressed that it will continue monitoring developments across the sector to determine whether the existing regulatory framework remains appropriate.

Industry Context

Live sports streaming has become an increasingly important customer engagement tool for betting operators, particularly in support of in-play wagering. Across Europe, regulators are also assessing whether gambling platforms offering extensive streaming content should be subject to broadcasting-style advertising standards.

Statements

Anders Dorph, Director of Spillemyndigheden, said:

“If sports streaming evolves from being an additional feature into becoming a significant part of operators’ business, it may become necessary to apply the same rules that govern broadcasters.”

Next Steps or Impact

The regulator’s position leaves the door open to future legislative or regulatory changes should betting operators continue expanding their sports streaming activities. The evolution of the market will determine whether streaming remains a supplementary service or becomes a separately regulated activity.
